Solar News: Solar Collectors

Solar Collector is the term generally used to describe a device that converts the suns radiation into something more useful, such as heat or electricity. This article concentrates on the solar collectors designed for converting the suns energy into heat which in turn heats your domestic and commercial hot water. Also for this article we are going to ignore flat plate solar panels which you can read about in my other posts. If you are initially researching solar panels you should start by reading the earlier posts in this blog about solar water heating panels.

There are two types of solar collector commonly used in the UK.

- Direct Flow Solar Collectors
- Heat Pipe Solar Collectors

Both systems usually utilise an evacuated tube. This works in a similar way to your double glazing at home. It forms a vacuum barrier that stops heat transferring away from the collector and it stops the cold air cooling the heated liquid down. While this barrier is an effective heat insulator it allows most of the suns radiation to pass through into the absorber surface of the collector.

The difference between direct flow and heat pipe collectors comes when we look at how the heat is transfered from the collector to your hot water cylinder.

Maria Gudelis

March 12th, 2008

Maria Gudelis a renowned real estate agent from California and a socialite is a very reputed personality in the arena. She has been involved in many a prestigious projects like the mega land deal that took place in Phoenix was just the best action in his career. Maria Gudelis had become a household name in the US. Being a girl Maria Gudelis had come a long way.

Maria Gudelis Interview:
I was interviewing her after the deal and I still remember the way she answered all the questions. It was really a pleasure interviewing a personality of her caliber. She was absolutely candid about anything asked to her. She began with how she was brought up moving on to her career and the difficulties she has gone through in her 16 year long career span. Maria Gudelis was small town girl born to a British Family and had 6 brothers and sisters. Maria Gudelis father was a farmer and her mother used to teach in a school.

Maria Gudelis - University of California:
Life was not as good for Maria Gudelis as her father had to feed 8 people together. Though he had her mother whose name was also Maria Gudelis and because of her efforts her father could nurse 6 children. Maria Gudelis was always good in her studies and she was the only child who was sent to the high school and then to a college. Being a bright student Maria Gudelis was always inclined towards art and she persuaded her masters in arts from University of California.

A very interesting incident with Maria Gudelis changed her entire career cycle. She assisted one of her friend Mary and her uncle who was a real estate consultant in US. They would go on weekends and would help him in his work. Mary’s uncle was particularly very fascinated with Maria Gudelis dedication towards the work. He noticed that Maria was very good at communication and the art of selling. She would also assist uncle in his land deals. Uncle whom Maria Gudelis and Mary called Uncle Sam was a renowned personality in the real estate arena. He had cracked many a big deals and was quite respected by all.

Maria Gudelis – Career:
Maria Gudelis learned the art of selling houses from him. But she had that penchant for the profession. When I asked her what she thought about her profession and being a girl was it difficult to be accepted by the mail dominant society she replied that people always thought a women is the homemaker and she is the one who would be staying for most of the time at home and hence it is very important that such decisions are taken by the female gender.

A woman can be the best guide for you when it comes to buying a house and setting up and Maria Gudelis was just the best at her job. She would make them feel absolutely homely and would put in her 100 percent when it comes to buying. The buyer is made to feel very much home and Maria Gudelis explains to them all the single and minute details of the house making them comfortable. She treats them as though they are a part of the same family. This had really worked wonders for Uncle has now almost all the deals were cracked. He was very happy with the way Maria Gudelis was performing and also paid her a salary.

After college Maria Gudelis was asked to join full time and she readily agreed as she was interested in the work and also she was being paid well. The business flourished and now she is a big name in the state and everybody started coming to her with their house plans and discussed how can they better it as Maria Gudelis had also started the Feng Shui guidance center where they can get suggestions on the famous Feng Shui. But soon Maria Gudelis was all alone as Uncle Sam passed away at the age of 91 and left everything for young Maria Gudelis to take care of and how well she did. Maria Gudelis grew the real estate business by leaps and bounds. They were the best real estate consulting firm in the US. Maria had penned many a celebrity deals like the Kate Moss apartment buying in Hollywood and many other celebrity deals.

Maria Sharapova and David Beckham also consulted Maria Gudelis for their real estate needs. She was married to Victor and had two children Anne and Maine. Mother of two Maria Gudelis was just so perfect and that we came to know from her children who were all mama praise.

Our interview ended on a very high note with she offering me a post for senior PR Manager and we both burst out in laughter at the same time. This was Maria Gudelis the real estate queen and here was her story.

Awaketodream

November 25th, 2007

People have asked me what the name of the site means, and since it is meaningful to me, I don’t mind sharing it (I am not the mystery woman that Finslippy is). It is not:

- a new-agey type of mantra
- a fantasy novel
- a new concept for meditation

In reality, awaketodream was sort of the last, easiest to remember option for blog names that I could think of when I moved my blog over from it’s previous incarnation, the coaster, hosted on blogger. (excuse me while I cough snidely in derision.) My first blog after I removed my blogger training wheels way back in July of 2003 was sleeplessinsurrey.net. At the time I lived in an adorable ikea-themed basement apartment and was fighting off an impending illness the likes of which would change my life completely.

Good time to start a blog.

Sleepless in surrey came about because I lived in surrey, a very large city south of Vancouver, BC, and I felt safe enough

Stating the obvious

November 25th, 2007

I just love the new(ish) “webclip” feature in gmail which adds a link to the top of the inbox featuring a headline from a recently updated website for news, entertainment, blogging, etc. I’m sure it’s just another fee-per-click advertising ploy, but I’ve read some really interesting articles I would never have seen otherwise through this feature.

Case in point: When Terrorists Go Mainstream, by Monica Duffy Toft, published in the Boston Globe and reprinted in the International Herald Tribune.
This is a really interesting article (somewhat) free from the usual rhetoric around patriotic buzzwords, dealing with the surprise Americans seem to be feeling that Hamas swept the recent democratic elections in Palestine. The real point of the article is bringing to light the fallacy that most Americans believe - that as far as “rogue nations” go, democracy = peace.

Duh……

November 25th, 2007

Ahhh, from the halls of academic research, where you may be highly educated, but it doesn’t make you smart:

Measuring the direct impact of war on health is difficult. Pre-war baseline data is scarce, collecting reliable information during a war is often dangerous, or even impossible, and official statistics come from a deficient health information system. Within these constraints, we will present the available information, which strongly suggests a negative impact on children’s health.

Cliff J, Noormahomed AR. The impact of war on children’s health in Mozambique. Social Science and Medicine, 36(7) 1993.
italics mine.
Since when did we not know that war is bad for kids?

Finale

November 4th, 2007

The ending of Alias is so unsatisfying. There is no real catharsis, no clearly understood growth, and only a fraction of moving on. Perhaps this is more reflective of real life, but in the world of children’s literature, where nearly every story has a message, and every book is an opportunity to teach something, it seems so pointless to inflict so much pain upon reader and child character alike without a genuine conclusion.

In the end, the parents have a horrible fight, calling each other names, throwing blame around, both recognizing only their own hurt. The children watch in horror from the stairs, and then take cover in a room together like soldiers in a trench. Realizing what they’ve done in front of their children, both Daniel and Miranda collapse, emotional and defeated. Daniel finally takes some of Miranda’s criticism to heart and goes home to scrub his flat, getting emotional and weepy over the socks he finds sprinkled throughout:

“Every now and again, he came upon an odd sock, and slipped it gratefully into his pocket. The straying socks of children of divorce, he thought, were very possibly the twentieth-century equivalent of all those olive brances of biblical times.” (p. 184)

…Finally, the children get stubborn, drag Miranda over to Daniel’s house and set up a discussion time while their parents are still humiliated by their nuclear fight. Concessions are made on both sides and the book ends with tentative acts of friendship.

This book has one or two moments of realistic introspection, such as Daniel’s “sock moment,” however they feel somewhat contrived found next to the ridiculousness of the rest of the novel. I just have no idea what this author was thinking with this book. It isn’t funny, nor does it accomplish a decent “issue” discussion. It seems to stand alone as a great example of parental irresponsibility and ugliness and childhood trauma.

Aha!

November 4th, 2007

In what may be the only true connection present in this storyline, I finally see what the author might be trying to say with this book. At one point near the end, Lydia shows up on her father’s doorstep after the horrible fight between Daniel and Miranda “on principle,” because it was Tuesday Teatime, and that was her father’s day to have them over. They start to argue and Lydia makes the point that if there is nothing really left of the marriage, then the only purpose they have at all is to do what is right for the kids - they are the only ones left to salvage, and the fighting isn’t helping anything. This reminds me so much of the conversation the kids and Daniel had about why he couldn’t simply “act” his way through the marriage in order for things to work. It’s not worth it to salvage a marriage, for Daniel to act simply to make it work… they need to start looking to what is best for the children so that they can get away from how hurt they (Daniel and Miranda) are. It seems like a simple message (and one I could probably have guessed) but again, it’s a shame that more time was given in this novel to gruesome pantomimes from Daniel about nefarious ways to maim his ex-wife.
